Welcome 2016 - 2017

Dear Parents/Guardian:

It is a tremendous honor to serve the students and families in the East Cleveland City School District. The 2016-2017 school will offer several programs to provide our students with the necessary educational, and therapeutic services needed to succeed. Each child that attends Shaw Academy deserves the opportunity to have a quality education and succeed as an adult.

Shaw Academy will utilize the integration of technology and classroom practices. This is referred to as blended learning, and it can take on many forms. East Cleveland City Schools has chosen to provide its high quality online content by using the Edmentum (Plato System). East Cleveland is proud to join Edmentum in the movement to improve education for all students through online learning. Our blended learning model no longer separates students from traditional schooling in that our students will be able to move seamlessly between online learning and classroom learning. While the Plato software is important, one must not forget about using the Plato software in conjunction with a blended learning environment. Students need the effective component of having a teacher in the classroom who will offer one-on-one and small-group support in addition to the Plato software. With this being said, we have four content focus teachers, one intervention specialist, one elective teacher and one guidance counselor that will play a pivotal role in facilitating student motivation and learning.

The students who attend Shaw Academy are identified as being more likely than other students to experience undesirable outcomes such as low achievement, high suspensions, or at risk of dropping out of high school. Our focus is to provide effective support and opportunities so that these students can stay on pace with their peers and graduate on time. The school will serve our students Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 2:50 p.m. Students are scheduled for one of two sessions during this time frame. The morning session affords students the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch while the afternoon session will afford students the opportunity to eat lunch. The students’ schedule is as follows:

8:00 a.m. - 8:25 a.m.

Breakfast

8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Session 1

11:15 p.m.-12:00 p.m.

Lunch

12:05 p.m. - 12:50 p.m.

Session 2

Students attending session one will be allowed to leave school at 11:00 a.m., or if eating lunch, at 12:00 p.m. Students attending session two must be on campus at 11:30 a.m. if they are planning to eat lunch. Otherwise, they must be in their seat at 12:05 p.m. Attendance is mandatory. All students attending Shaw Academy must enter the building through the building main entrance from the Stanwood Road side of the building.

If you have any questions related to school policies, procedures, or schedules, please call 216-268-6002 or email me at lellis@east-cleveland.k12.oh.us. I look forward to serving you and your student during the 2016-2017 school year.
