I hope you enjoyed a restful and productive summer. It seems like yesterday, we were enjoying the End of the Year Block Party. Where did the time go? As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we are excited to share with you that Caledonia Elementary School will be integrating more Mindfulness into our daily activities.
The definition of Mindfulness is simply… noticing what is happening right now. For example, Mindfulness is taking notice of how the body feels and what one sees, smells and tastes. Mindfulness is also noticing what the mind is doing. What happens when these experiences are noticed?
When these experiences are noticed, a sense of focus is enhanced, which leads to improvement in diverse areas of your life.
Improved focused can help a student to achieve at higher levels in sports, school or music. Moreover, improved focus can help students calm down when they’re sad, angry or frustrated. Mindfulness helps you deal with tough emotions.
A growing body of scientific research shows its positive effects on mental health and well-being. Practicing mindfulness has been shown to improve attention and reduce stress as well as increase one’s ability to regulate emotions and feel compassion and empathy. Mindfulness also is widely considered an effective psychotherapy treatment for adults, children, and adolescents with aggression, ADHD, or mental health problems such as anxiety.
Mindfulness strategies for Watching One’s Thoughts and Random Acts of Kindness will be implemented when students arrive to school and when they dismiss from recess. Additionally, Mindfulness strategies for Gratitude will be implemented each Thursday…Thankful Thursday.
More information regarding Mindfulness will be presented at the Caledonia Curriculum Night, being held on September 3, 2019 from 5:00 -6:00 in our café. This meeting will explain in greater detail why Mindfulness is a valuable tool for our students. Please note, you do have the right to have your child (ren) opt out of the Mindfulness initiative.
Do not hesitate to contact the school if you have questions regarding these matters.
